My wife and I gave a personal donation to California's Proposition 8 campaign. As a result of this donation, we have become targets of criticism from a number of people who strongly disagree with Proposition 8. I respect their right to voice their views, opinions and beliefs. This particular blog posting is for those who have sought a response from us. These comments will be all that we'll make at this time.
Question: Why did we support Proposition 8?
Answer: We are true believers in the doctrines and principles professed and practiced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Church members were encouraged by their leaders to support Proposition 8.
Question: What does the Church teach in this regard?
Answer: All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan.
Question: What else does the Church teach specific to intimate relationships and marriage?
Answer: The Church has a single, undeviating standard of sexual morality: intimate relations are proper only between a husband and a wife united in the bonds of matrimony. The Church’s opposition to same-sex marriage neither constitutes nor condones any kind of hostility towards homosexual men and women. Protecting marriage between a man and a woman does not affect Church members’ Christian obligations of love, kindness and humanity toward all people.
Question: How can I learn more about the Church's teachings regarding these topics?
Answer: Please go to http://newsroom.lds.org/ldsnewsroom/eng/commentary/the-divine-institution-of-marriage and also to http://newsroom.lds.org/ldsnewsroom/eng/commentary/same-sex-marriage-and-proposition-8
