Conference Muffins

My wife ia a great cook. This is known to many. One of her all-time favorite treats is Conference Muffins. They appear twice each year -- on the Sunday mornings of General Conference in April and October.

This tradition, of baking and eating Conference Muffins, has been adopted by all of our married children, my wife's two sisters, and her friend Janalee. Throughout the land, on these special Sundays, separated by six long months, happy people are made happier by indulging in Conference Muffins.

But why be selfish? It's time to open up the secret recipe book and encourage all to bake and eat Conference Muffins. This recipe originally came from Joyce's dear mother, Renae Bleak.

Conference Muffins

1/3 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

Set over at 350 degrees. Mix first three ingredients.
Then mix in the rest of the ingredients.
Place in greased muffin pan. Bake 20-25 minutes

Now here's the exciting part:

Immediately roll each muffin in melted butter (not margarine) and then roll each in a generous portion of cinnamon sugar. The butter acts as the glue that holds the cinnamon sugar to the muffin. The goal is to get lots of cinnamon sugar onto each muffin.

Please try out the recipe -- it will make you happy -- and you don't have to wait until next General Conference. Then share your results on this blog posting.

Conference Muffins for all!!

  1. These muffins are called "French Breakfast Puffs" in the Better Homes and Gardens' cookbook. It's a pretty ubiquitous recipe.

  2. Since that fateful October when Bill and I enjoyed conference at the Murray estate in Sammamish - and we partook of the bounty that is Joyce Murray's amazing cooking skills - I have been obsessed with Conference Muffins. I asked if I could please please pretty please have the recipe. She obliged with one stipulation - they MUST BE SHARED and ENJOYED. I've made them for my own family every conference, since.

    They are basic divinity.

I'm pretty sure that - ubiquitous or not - the trick to this recipe is being shown how to make them first by someone who's doing so out of love for her family. Just makes things taste better.

  3. I have enjoyed "conference muffins" on multiple occasions. It is funny that when I wake up on the first Sunday of April and October I always have a craving for cinnamon and sugar. It is a great tradition.
